Exercise 1: Thinking about your workspace

I am lucky to have a room for my personal use where I can study and work. Over the years, I have acquired most of the equipment I need. I have different types of paint, pencils, pens and markers. I also like to create digital illustrations and have a computer with a small Wacom tablet and an iPad Pro.

There are a few aspects of the room that I would like to be different. It is north-oriented and a bit dark compared to the rest of the flat and it can get easily cluttered. I cannot personalise it too much, partly because I am renting, and partly because of a lack of space. As a result, it tends to be mainly functional.

However it works well for the time being. I like to have a few illustrations pinned wherever I can. At the moment I have prints of some of Beatrix Potter’s sketches and a few of my sketches.

I like to create illustrations that are not very big in scale (maximum A3). It means that I do not need a lot of space to work. I never thought about it before but I wonder if the space we have can have an impact on the work we end up doing.

I tried to imagine my perfect working space. It would be very light, I would like to be able to experiment with colourful walls as I enjoy being surrounded by colours. This might be something that can be achieved in the future.

I created a few sketches of my working space, some of my favourite objects in the room, and the place as I would like it to be.
