Research point – Visual language

Nowadays, I tend to gather examples of illustrations or useful material nearly every day whether it is in the street, at home when I notice some interesting packaging or read an article accompanied by an illustration for instance.

I mostly keep all my collections in a digital form:

  • Photos (taken with my mobile phone and, when I remember to take it with me, my small digital camera as the quality is better);
  • Pinterest boards;
  • Bookmarks organised in folders (websites of illustrators, tutorials, etc.);
  • Simple PowerPoint files containing examples of illustrations or patterns;
  • When I studied Illustration Sketchbooks, I also learned to use my sketchbook as a visual diary. I have started drawing nearly everyday again but have not ventured much outside to sketch and this is a habit I would like to develop as I enjoyed it a lot when I did it. It is easy to think that I do not have time to collect some material for sketching when I go somewhere. Starting small might help (maybe just take a pencil and paper). Like every habit, if I start doing it for a while, it will become easier and I will get better organised over time.

I collect all sorts of images:

  • Examples of illustrations (it can be in a childrens’ book, a newspaper, on some packaging, an interesting illustration in a shop window, wallpaper and much more;
  • Signs and painted text or interesting fonts;
  • Street art, graffiti;
  • Textures that could be used in the future;
  • Reference photos that could be used to create illustrations later;
  • Any combination of colours or shapes that I find interesting.

What does it say about who I am as a developing illustrator?

I found it difficult to answer that question as I felt that I was gathering many different things. However, I can see a trend in the type of illustrations I like although it is a bit difficult to explain. I would describe them as “happy, colourful” illustrations, whatever the style. In a way, I like illustrations that are not necessarily intended for children, but can bring back the child in us. Although I find all themes interesting, I will often take photos of animals, flowers or patterns in particular.

How can I improve the way I collect images for inspiration?

As mentioned above, I will start using my sketchbook outside more. I will start small and develop my practice over time.

I have started taking my camera with me more often but I should try to have it with me most of the time, because I have often been disappointed by the quality of pictures on my phone.

Finally I need to keep an eye on the way I organise my collection of images. It is getting bigger everyday and it could become harder to find a particular picture I need.
